2015 Day 8 Head North

Day 8 Head North

After having two bad days of what we called bad weather we finally had a beautiful day.  It was even warm enough to eat on our Lani.  Our coffee was great the pancakes were different.  We were having banana pancakes with coconut syrup.

Now how can you eat pancakes that are looking back at you?  I mean come on.

Have you notice every morning we have had a different breakfast.  At home it would be cold cereal with fruit.  Great fruit!

Today was clean sheets day.  We put one sheet in the washer because that's all it could hold.  We put clean sheets on the bed.  Wait a minute the extra sheets didn't fit.  Oh well, wash one sheet and dry one sheet.  After putting the second sheet in the washer, we packed a picnic.  We would travel north to Fleming Beach Park.  After that we wound go up to the blowhole.  We got on the road with our beach chairs and lunch heading toward beautifully scenery with a lot of curves and slow switch back turns.  We have been to Fleming Beach before but it's hard to find the turn off.  Well we found it as we pasted it.  Okay that's all right.  There is plenty of places to view the country side.

Lots of surfing dudes out there.  We always wonder how do they get down there and how do they get back up to the road.

We thought lets go to the blowhole.  Now the blowhole is on the northeast part of the small globe.  I mean we were heading south.  Holy Cow! What a road.

People were like ants by the blowhole.  They walked down there.  A long torturous walk.  Needless to say we found a great flat rock and watched the idiots travel down.  One couple had a small child with them.  Hey this rock was a great place to whale watch.  We also saw some turtles.
I think we sat there for an hour.  Okay off the the beach and lunch.  We had several stops along the way.  One paid tribute to a surfer.

Another stop well,  you tell me.

Can you say wild boar.  Man I would not want to meet that animal in the woods,  Off to the beach.
Fleming Beach is very popular.  It's hard to find a place to park.  Spaces to park on the island are small.  Maybe they are trying to tell us to leave our big SUVs at home and go small.
We found a great place to eat in the shade.

After lunch we found a great place to watch.  I mean this is no beach for an old dude like me to swim at, so we watch.  I think it's the best beach to boogie board at.  You can walk out and wait for a good wave.  You didn't have to wait long.  Large waves kept rolling in , one after another.
If you look in the background where the big waves were hitting, that's dragon's tail.  That's where we walked out on the golf course to see the dragons tail. Tired we got back to our cond knowing we had a successful day.  See ya!

2015 Day 7 Did you say the sun would shine today?

Day 7  Did you say the sun would shine today?

It is hard to believe it would cold today. Let see if I can describe today with words that start with the letter D.  Today was a dark, dreary, dank, drippy, damp and disgusting day, not bad.  If you can come up with a D letter to describe a bad day let me know.

We got up at 6:30 today and tried to have our coffee on the Lani but it was too cold.  Do you think we a spoiled? Maybe we are.  The temperature was probably 70 degrees, but the wind was strong and cold.  We had breakfast inside for the first time.

Okay the doesn't look good, kinda like a Denver omelet, taste great.

After breakfast we did house chores and laundry, you know the exciting things that needed to be done.  We did go to the ABC store.  That is a walk and shopping.  Part of the morning was watching the crane next store.  The crane operator has to climb up there each day.  Maybe he lives up there.  Hey saves the climb each day.  Maybe he has a kitchen, bathroom.  I figure his living room chair has all his controls to operate the crane.  I also saw an Leprechaun yesterday.

After lunch we went to the Whaler mall to work on our quest, you know Clela wants a dish for my keys and phone.  We looked in several stores finding nothing that fit her requirements.  We did go in the ABC store and bought two coffee cups.
After coming out of the store we heard a helicopter taking off from the golf course.  Then one minute latter another plane landed.  So you know me I went over to take a look.  A helicopter would land and pictures were taken.  We first thought it was for a golf tournament.  Then two landed at the same time.

Could be a wedding.  If you look in the background of the first picture you will see a large tent.  Another guy said this morning there were six helicopters sitting on the golf course.  We still don't know what was going on.  All the people I saw were Japanese.
When we got back to the condo we spent some time on the Lanai listen to Hawaiian music and having an afternoon drink.  We finally got to see the sun and a sunset.
Perfect way to say see ya!

2015 Day 6 You have to do what you have to do

Day 6

I'm like Clark you got to have a hook for people to watch or read a story.  Well I'm the same I've don't have much to say.  Today we have high wind and surf warnings.  That means to us Midwesterner's it going to snow and blow.  Well folks there is no snow here, but it is overcast and blowing.  No one is out tanning.  The kids are in the pool.  The kids would be in the pool if it was raining and cold.

We awoke at 6:30 this morning, not very warn out, but we still had our coffee on the Lani.  Gee whiz no breakfast picture today.  We had Jimmy with a slice of spam along with slices of pineapple.  We drank our coffee in our Bad Ass mugs.  I thought the weather man got it wrong like they seem to do at home, but there was not a cloud in the sky. Beautiful!  I decided to make the pictures larger.  I like it.

Okay there were a couple of clouds.

Do you remember what it was like to go someplace with children.  You had to pack for every event, whether it was feed the baby or changing a dipper, remember breathe through your nose.  You had everything in that bag, a bottle of milk, crackers, oh ya Cheerios.  Well now there is Clela and me.  It takes for ever.  Okay today we are going for a walk on the boardwalk next store.  You would think for us oldsters that would be easy.  Clela says let go.  Okay she goes into the bathroom.  I get my shoes on and come out of the bedroom and she is playing a game on her IPad.  I say lets go and we head for the door and I stop and say lets gets some water.  So we each grab a bottle and head for the door.  I get to the door and say I better go the the bathroom.  I come out out and she is playing the game. We finally get out the door.  Somethings don't change.  Hey, you got to do what you got to do.

The ocean walk goes from here to the Whalers.  Our goal today was in walk 30 minutes.  We got in the car and drove over to the park entrance and started our walk.

The walk goes past the Dukes restaurant.  We have reservations of Dukes on Valentines day.  We made them online before we got here.  I guess we are techies.

I told Clela lets see if we can stay in the complex.

She said there were 209 unit for rent starting from $350 - $800 a night.  Forget about it.

We ate lunch and listen to our story.  The ocean was calling us.  You got it. after several attempts we finally got our act together and found a spot under a tree.  Didn't want too much sun you know.  About 5 minutes under the tree the sun under for good.

The waves started getting closer to our chairs and it had a cold wind.  That's it, we're out of here.  I said lets get a drink and set on the Lani.  We had less wind, but still cold.  I put my jeans over my swimming suit and still was cold.  I mean look at me can't you tell I'm cold.  I think I need a sweat shirt.  I don't have one.  Hey the rum comes from Kauai.  We all did some Rum tasting.

Look at your poor mother.  She is very cold.

Doesn't she look like she needs a kimona.  What?  You don't know what a kimona is?  Every women her ages needs a Kimona.  A kimona is a house coat.  What is a house coat?  Man! A house coat is a bath robe or a duster the women wear all day.  Don't ask.  I think we got to do what we got to do.  Maybe that needs to be another quest.

Just supper and bed time.  Not!  I go to bed at 10:00 each night.  That's 5:00 your time.
See ya!

2015 Day 5

Day 5 Sunday February 8
Ah Sunday is a special day for us.  We take a short walk around the property,go to the general store for a Sunday paper and some eggs for breakfast.  It seems like I have been showing you what we eat each morning.  Can't stop now.

Yes that is Spam,  Hawaiians favorite meat.  Introduced during WWII and is still here.  You can go to Mac Donald's find it on the menu for breakfast.  There are hundreds and hundreds of recipes, even Spam ice cream.

After reading the paper we went on our quest.  Remember we are looking for a koa bowl / dish and a great travel coffee mugs.  So off we went to a Gift and Craft fair. We found a beautiful tree out front.

We went to the Maui Civic Center.  The fair was smaller than yesterday.  We saw one bowl there but to much money.

Okay we are going to cut to the chase. Let's buy some coffee mugs.  We got back in the car and drove up to were the Farmers Market is and bought our mugs.  Before I show you I want to warn Katie.  Ok ready Katie here they are.

Sorry Katie for the name.  We liked this model because they are easy to grip.  Yes there they are.  The best damn Bad Ass Coffee Mugs. On to our last quest, a Koa Dish.  That's it for today.  See ya!

2015 Day 4

Day 4 Can you count?
If you saw an earlier version of day three you will notice I called Day 3 Day 4.  Lets see can I count?  Hmm. Count Dracula can.
Count von Count

So why can't I. Let's see Uno, Dos,Tres and Cuatro.  Enough of that.
Today Clela and I got up at 6:00.  That's a good time. Everything seems so fresh. A beautiful day with the sum shining (when it gets up over the mountains), a clear day.  Today as usual we ate well on the Lani.
Can't beat that.

After breakfast we went to a swap meet in a city about a hour from here.  She had here maps and I had my phones maps, that's GPS baby.  I hooked my phone into the cars radio.  We have done this before but not in Maui.  Hey did I ever show you my car?  Well here it is, new!

My car is an Hyundai Veloster.   Nice little car, an upgrade at no cost.  Did you know this car has three doors?  The car has two in front and one in the back on the passengers side.  Crazy?   Well the GPS works great.  We had Hawaiian music playing and voice directions.  You know I never follow directions very well, just ask Clela.  The GPS had us heading toward the airport so I didn't turn.
The GPS re-calculated.  We were going the the University of Maui.  I knew I didn't have to turn.  We were about two blocks form our destination when the GPS took us for a ride (it's getting back at me).  It was saying I"ll fix you for not following directions Ha HA!  It took us on a joy ride through a subdivision.  I thought as we were turning right and left, maybe it's not at the University but near it.  But it did show the final destination at the school.  Hmm.  Well we came out on a street that allowed us to drive right into the university.  We parked the car and went in.  Remember we were two blocks and we drove 10 more minutes.

There were a coupe hundred tents or Sellers.  Similar in size to the one on Oahu.

Clela almost bought a Koa dish.
Time to head back.  For sometime we have tried to eat at this restaurant -bakery in the country.  The place a very busy.
We decided to have a chicken pot pie.  It was great.

Lemonade and ice tee.

We were driving past Lahaina when we decided to see if there was and art show.  We found over secert parking place and we walked the streets looking for our yesterdays quest.  Yes that's right a Koa plate and a traveling coffee mug.  Tired now we headed back to the condo.  Another great day.  See ya!

2015 Day 3

Damn Good Day
Okay grandchildren I'm going to say damn a lot today, I hope that is appropriate to say.  Our damn good day started with me sleeping until 7:30.  Wow! can you believe that.  I guess being up for 24 hours has caught up to me.  Now what is a damn good day?  It's when you have nothing planned and you have fun.

My damn good day started with a damn good cup of coffee, my choice Maui Mokka out side looking for Wales.  Next I had a damn good breakfast composed of Jimmy Dean Delights, English Muffin, Chicken Sausage Patty, egg whites and sharp American cheese and some fruit.  Wait a minute, I can see that smile from here.  Hey it's good. I also had Safeway orange juice. Nothing but the best for us.

After breakfast we putting our walking shoes on and went to the best damn farmer's market on Maui.  The market is about three blocks away.  Clela loves flowers.

Today we bought a tomato, apple bananas, Papaya, pineapple and a mango.

They also had a spread for bagels called Lilkoi Passion fruit cream cheese.  Great spread.  After shopping we went across the street to a park.  We found a bench and set down to look a the ocean, Lanai and Molokai.

We hope to see some whales.  The best thing we saw was a dad and little girl wading in the water.  She had a sun hat on and a swimming suit with flippers for swimming.  Best of all she would go on shore, pick up two hands of sand and wade out in the water and throw it in.  It reminded me of the grand kids many years ago.
Well we walked back stopping at the ABC store.  This is where our quest for the day started.  We wanted to find a Koa dish for my keys and phone.  Also we were looking for the best damn coffee travel mugs.  You say coffee mugs, you have a ton of those at home.  We forgot to bring ours.  Clela's wants no metal on top and I want one that doesn't leak.  We found none.

After arriving home it was coffee time.  This time Clela used her coffee choice, Peaberry.  What you ask is Peaberry.

Clela's coffee won hands down.  She has the best damn coffee in Maui.

After eating the best damn lunch and taking our time to listen to our story (taking a nap) we decided to take our quest to Lahaina.  I always park in the parking lot off  Prison street. Not today it was full.  We drove back toward the Hard Rock Cafe and going through several parking lots we found the best damn lot in Lahaina.  Get this we payed $3.00 for all day.  Yes that right three bucks.  Holy cow.  Keep this a secret.  Most lots charge $5.00 for two hours or $20 a day.  Off we went on our quest.  We did find the best damn ice cream in Lahaina.  That's all we found today, but it was fun.

Stay tune for more exciting quest.  See ya!

2015

Day 1 & 2
He is back, oh no, I though we got rid of him last year.  Yes I am back for another year.  I'm writing because my two daughters Chris and Kathy asked me to.  Well here we go.

Day 1
It is always hard to sleep the night before you go on vacation, even though we have been doing this for many years.  Well no exception.  It was great our snow removable people were there to clean the three inches of snow in our driveway.  That was after all at midnight.  I told you it's hard to sleep.

We arrived at the airport on time.  Our plane was there on time.  Boy that's a first in the wonderful world of air travel.  When we know the seat arrangement for the plane we take seats A and C.  Here is our strategy, no one wants to set in the middle of strangers.  It works most of the time.  Our trip to Atlanta takes 90 minutes.  We were all set.  The doors were about ready to close.  My wife strategy works.  Wait, wait some people just came in.  Go by us, please.  Nope, there stands this big back dude and his girl friend.   He is very polite, well dressed, hey he could be an NFL wide receiver.  He has the height and weight, 6'-2, maybe 210.  Clela says to him "do you want the window or isle seat", he says no. She said "you mean you want to set in the middle?"  He says yes this is my first flight.  He sets down and Clela says "are you afraid? ", he shakes his head yes.  You see he and his girl friend were on the Delta flight the day before that had mechanical problems and they could only catch a flight the next day.  Thanks Delta, fix your planes will ya.  Clela's strategy would have work.

The plane is now taxing out for take off.  Our young man is terrified.  Clela say to him "do you want me to hold your hand" and he says no.  We are now climbing to our flying height.  He puts his jacket over his head.  He leans forward placing his head on the seat in front of him.  He says there for a while.  Clela thinks he is praying.  He finally sets back with his jacket flying all over the place.  Clela and I start to talk to him.  Maybe we can take his mind off his worries.  Clela says where are you going.  He says we're taking a little vaca, his words, to South Carolina.  We want to go to the beach and see the ocean.  Well that didn't work. The jacket went over his head.  Then I saw a light go on under his jacket.  He had is phone out and was checking his text.  We went on and the jacket came off and he finally settled back.  After we landed I saw him in the terminal.  He said not bad for my first flight.  I said you did great.  Here is a young man from Wisconsin who never left our state and all he wants to do is see the ocean.

Our next plane left on time.  Our plane was a new Airbus 330.  We payed extra for added leg room and we got it.  However PLEASE, PLEASE, lock me up if I ever choose to fly 10 hours straight.  That by far is the worst thing to do.  Don't get me wrong the plane was great, the seats were plush, the service was great, but....  I remember when we use to fly people would have there window shades up to look out.  Now days everyone has there shades down so they can watch TV, play a movie or play a game.  Don't get me wrong that's great, I did it, Clela did it.  But to set there for 10 hours with the lights turned down left me batty.  It is like setting in this tube going 400 miles an hour in the dark.  Man that was hard.

We got to Oahu in less than 10 hours, got something to eat and waited for our next plane.  Our plane was late arriving but left on time.  Go figure.  Planes on the islands are like taxes, they just keep on the move and never stop.  Our plane has gone through the mill.

We sat in the back role 25 out of 26.  Yes that is an engine.  If there was an open window I could have touched the engine.  I would say it was maybe 6" to 8" from me.  If you put your head against the window and looked up you could see the inner skin of the plane.  Yes the bulk head of the plane had separated from rest of the plane.  No worries, be Happy.

Day 2 Doing the necessary things.

Did you ever notice even after being so tired the night before you still get up very early.  I guess it has something to do with the fact we are now five hours different from you, but that doen't matter.  We got up made some coffee and sat on the lanai.  Chris the birds are back and making a racket. After finishing our coffee we went for a walk.  As we were walking out to the ocean the warm sun was warming our backs.  Under a big tree there was lots of red headed cardinals, you know Sammy's birds.

After the walk we went to C.J. for breakfast, one of our favorites places to eat.
Great food.  You know me I like the Mac nut pancakes.

We wanted coffee, coffee grown on Maui, so we went to the Maui grown Company Store.

Here we brought two types Maui Mokka for me and Peaberry for Clela.  You know we had to taste test first.
Our last stop of the morning was Safeway for food.  You know when I'm on vacation I've got to know where my next meal is coming from.  At the check out I started to bag when I heard someone say I'll do that for you sir.  I said okay and turned around to see a fireman bagging for me.  Man that was great.  I thanked him.  As I was walking out of the store I thought man I must be getting OLD.  Upon returning the cart to the store, there he was still bagging.  I thought I'm okay, I'm not that OLD.
See ya tomorrow.
