Day 10 - Chinese New year- Monk

I always think we will establish a routine only to find we don't.  The only routine so far is coffee and breakfast on the baloney.  That's ok.  Today our goal is to go to Lahaina to see the Chinese New Year Celebration later in the day.  I could go to Lahaina everyday.  This morning we went down to the ocean to get our inspiration for the day. Not, what do you think we are, those people who pay homage to the ocean.  Now it's early and we have our pool towels and we're going to put them on chairs, you know before everyone else gets there. Huh. there we'll show them.  We ended staying for two hours.  We met a retired farmer and his wife from North Dakota.  Had a great talk.  He grew soy beans and corn.  We talked about Monsanto and how they control everything. Thanks Brad.  He said they use to cheat a little and grow some from his own seed.  But if you got caught that was it, no more seed.  As we were sitting there we saw what I was trying to show you the other day.  The guy on the Sail board is taking a message in a bottle from a little girl out to sea.
We picked up our towels, ya I know, mid western values, got new ones and came back to our condo.

Clela has a plan, Clela always has a long range plan of things to do on her bucket list.  Here is one.  As we drove into Lahaina we found this Buddhist Temple.  Not as impressive as the one on Oahu.

We added a second goal for the day and that was to find an Office Max to buy a new battery for my notebook.  We had a map on my phone but when we got there there was no store.  Clela was not to happy, it was a lot of walking and it was hot. Sorry to be talking a bout hot.  I think it was 90 degrees difference in temp.  On her bucket list was, the best shaved ice in Maui, we decided to try it.
We must have gone by this place many times.
It was really good!  Now we decided to share one.  Two spoons one straw.  Hmmm so good.  Ok no beans on the bottom this time.  I am getting smarter right?  Wrong.  As she is using the straw on the bottom, by the ice cream I'm thinking she has a cold.  Well the Mr. Monk is taking over my body.  Oh no I'm feeling hot, my throat feels sore, I'm feeling a little strange.  Is it too late.  She said I would be OK, but my lips are tingling.  Ok, Ok maybe it just cold from eating shaved ice, or is a sign of things to come. Time will tell.

On to the Chinese New Year Celebration.  We arrived a little before five.  The crew was just arriving.

We went into the Wo Hing Museum and it started out with a marshall art showing.
As I was filming this I was thinking I hope he hangs on to that spear/knife.  Next we have the dragons.
The dragons then went around to people and collected a small donation that would give those people good luck to the year.  You put the money in an envelope and place it in the dragons month.  Can't pass this up.
My turn!

Cool.  On your way back we decided to stop at a new mall and check it out.  We found a Wallgreens.  There was on Office Max store.  I ordered my computer battery $120,ouch. We also found several new places to eat.  It was almost 6:30 and we wanted to get something to eat fast. We wanted to see the Olympics.  We chose a place called Teddy's Big Burgers.  Nice clean new place.  We gave our order and waited and waited and waited, get the idea.  We ordered to go.  After about 30 min. our food and drinks were ready.  We got back to the condo, Clela with the drinks and me with the food.  As we were riding up to our room Clela was drinking.  We sat down to eat, she gave me my drink and half of it was gone, ya half. Now I didn't drink that, who did?  You guessed it using my straw!  Now Mr. Monk is processing my body again.  I mean twice in one day.  But, but I always wash my hands before I eat.  That's not going to help me how.  But , but I've got my Purell in my packet.  To late Ethel.  I took the straw out and drank the contaminated soda.  That's all see YA.

Day 9 - Hover Day and Sisters

Today is a normal day.  We got up early, had our breakfast got dressed and made a mad dash to the ocean.  Just like Florida you got to get down there early.  As soon as the towel place opens up people are there to get towels.  They then go and put there towels on chairs and leave.  Signs are posted, but they don't care.

Anyway we found two chairs and watched the waves roll in.  This as I said the other day if comfortable. There was fog between islands so when I saw a puff of spray I would use the binoculars up to get a better look, only to find I couldn't tell ocean from land.  There was a young whale breaching every 20 seconds over by Lanai.  That was cool to watch. When we came back I was downloading a pic and I ran across Katie singing Sisters.  Great song Katie

Today is HOVER DAY!  That means we are changing the linen and cleaning the condo.

This is my mean machine, it sucks up everything.  It took us an hour and a half.  Not bad.  My Hover cleaned every spot I could find.  My sister Mary would be proud.
Later on we are going to Lahaina to watch Chinese New Year.  I will take some pics.  Oops that is tomorrow night.  See ya

Day 7 & 8

Yesterday was cloudy most of the day, but no rain.  In the morning we went for a walk to the ABC store.  Clela had her list, but this didn't help.  A couple days ago I don't know if it told you but we were standing outside looking at post cards (old fashion YA) when this women comes up takes a card, gets into her car and drives away.  I said to Clela did you see that. Oh well.  We walked up to the Times store for some food.  Clela got some soup for lunch.  As we were walking by a store window it saw this ad.
You might say what is so special about this.  The first time we went to Hawaii with Jerry and Diane we first stayed on Oahu.  We took a walk on the main drag.  You remember it's a great place.  All the lights and great places to eat, the international market place.
Great family pic!  Sammy your so little.  Alyssa you probably don't remember much being sick.  Anyway Jerry wanted a plate of spaghetti.  He said there has to be someplace on this island where I can get plate of spaghetti and I'm only going to spend $6.00.  So we walked and walked all night long for the plate of spaghetti for $6.00 and never found one.  He said I'm not going to eat that foreign food.  Tired we walked back to our hotel and ate there.  Jerry ordered a plate of spaghetti for $6.00.  Oh by the way we had plate of spaghetti last night.
And that was yesterday.

Today is a great day, the sun is shining and no rain in sight.  We are sitting here doing our morning things.  I'm working on this blog and Clela is banking, for us and grandma great.  She is mad because she can't find 20 cents.  Yesterday we did go swimming and sat out for a little.  No direct sun, however, I did burn myself.  Ya I know, I always ware a rash guard, well I took it off to swim.
We went to the farmers market to get some vegies.  Then we took a drive north.  Do you remember the Ritz Hotel and the dragons tail, well that's where we went this morning.  We stopped at a small park to watch a surfer.
The day was just beautiful so we decided to go on an picnic.  We went to two different places.  They were just places where people pull off the road, just outside Lahaina.  We found a picnic table at the first beach and ate lunch.
Clela never wants to look at the camera.  After eating we went to the next beach.  I'm going to call it brown sand beach, kinda chocolate in color.  Not dirty, but chocolate in color.

We setup our chairs and I went snorkeling.  First time.  I will go back there again because I didn't see many fish.  I guess I have to go out farther.  No big waves.  This is a good place because all the big boats come here and stop here to let the people off to snorkel.
Got to try that again.  What a day. but it's not over yet.  Just one more thing. Remember, it is Wednesday at 5:00.

Day 6 - Dill problems

If by any chance you are a die heart follower you know there was no blog yesterday.  Well my computer is in the hospital for repair.  I was in the middle of an update to ITunes when the install stopped.  So I restarted and got an error message, Msvcr80.dll missing.  I can't backup my IPhone or grams IPad.  You might say dll what is dll?  I thought that was something you use for making pickles.

Now that is dill but not the computer .dll .  .dll is a program that runs in many programs.  Well mine is missing, it's gone.  Where is my .dll I don't know.

Yesterday started out raining.  By the time we were ready to go the rain stopped.  Our goal was to go to Pa'ia.  This town is about 30 miles from here.  I think it took us an hour.  Traffic jams to the tee.  We thought it was bad on Kauai.  But here it was crazy.  Anyway Pa'ia is a town that never got out of the sixty's.  You see people walking around in tie dye clothing.  People with guitars.  You know people who smoke.... What does straight lace Gene and Clela want there? We go to eat.  Yes eat.  We eat at the Fish Market.  The Ono burger is the best.

Ono not Oh no but Ono
After eating we went across the street for some Gelato.  Hmmmm
See that bench out front?  That's were grams sat and ate her Gelato.

After eating we headed north about five miles to Ho' okipa beach.  This is where they do kite boarding.  We sat down on the beach to watch.  The waves were maybe 10-12 foot high.  Here's a video.
I know the quality is not the best.  I've got to use the IPad.  Well there is this dude surf boarding and he catches this monster wave.  He riding it for all it's worth.  All of sudden at the top of the wave right at the crest he looses it.  The board goes flying through the air like an arrow and he is flying only to fall into this monster wave.  His board is now half way to the shore.  Finally you see him bobbing in the water.  He is ok.  He was under for a long time.  Now you can see him swimming back to shore, doing the back stroke.  The back stoke.  He waves are swallowing him but he keeps swimming.  He fines his board I don't how in all that foam and wave, but he does.  Here is a pic of him near shore.
Whew!
We went back to Kahului to go to Costco.  Ya Costco.  Want to prove it here is a pic.

I'm not buying.  Best prices.  We got some Kona Coffee for $12.  This is for two pounds.  Now there is one problem, everyone on Maui was either trying to shop or trying to leave.  Aggressive driving pays off.  It took us 30 min to just get out of the parking lot and then 45 min back to the condo.  That was our day.  See Ya!!

Day 5

Today is Ground Hog Day.  Now if you were here (I wish you were) it was raining most of the day.  Does that mean winter in Maui is over? Hmm.  If so most of the rainy days are over.  That means our cold days of 79 will go up to 83 and sunny. Hmm  I hope the sun was not shining on you.  I hope you don't have six more weeks of winter.

This is also Super Bowl Sunday.  The game started at 1:00.  There was now pre-game madness just the game.  I like that.  Go Seahawks!  Got to back an Badger player Wilson.  I don't know if I will watch the whole game.  Its not raining.  There is no one out side.

There is a lot of people at the pool.  Maybe they have a large screen setup.  I'll check it out halftime.

I guess you figured out I don't have to say today.  Oh we did go out today.  We got in the car and drove across the street.  Hey it was raining.  We checked out places to eat and went to the Times for food.

We went for our walk at half time and I was wrong, people are out, they are in the pool, and swimming in the ocean.  After the game we are going for a swim.  Clela is feeling better to day.  So I will leave you with that.  See ya!

Day 4

February 1st today Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit.  You say that to the first person you see on the 1st of each month and it will bring you good luck.  Try it!  Today we got up at 5:00.  You ask why so early aren't you on vacation.  Well at our age habits are hard to change.  There was a light rain falling but that is ok.  By the time we ate breakfast, fruit and bagels, (not on the balcony) the sun broke through.  We got dress and went for a walk and ended up sitting by then ocean.  Saw cruise ship going to another island.
We sat there, the sun was warm and I thing we took a little nap.  Well you would too if you got up at 5:00.  We came back to your condo, had a cup of coffee and got ready to go to Lahaina for lunch.  You know me, routine baby.  Give me three meal a day.
We looked for cheep parking.  The first place close to the main drag was $18 for 2 hours.  We found a parking lot for $8 for 2-8.  Our goal for the day was to eat at Cheeseburger In Paradise and the on to the banyan tree for an art show.
That place has the best burgers in Maui.

How's the smile?

Check out the bracelet Sammy.  You know Kathy should be proud of our smiles.  So Smile
We went the park, no art show.  I guess they didn't want to take a chance on rain.  We wanted to sit down, but we had to look hard.  It seem like the homeless have taken over the benches.
Those people are not homeless.  I'm always fascinated by the size of this tree.
I could not leave the downtown area without showing the ABC store for Brad.  Are you happy Brad?  You know they always have good prices.
As we were driving back from the airport we notice a bypass around Lahaina so we took it.  Very few people use it.  Great to know.
After listening to our story we got rain.  Here is what it look like.  I'll leave you with this.  See Ya

Day 3

All my life I've been a man who liked a routine.  You know what to expect.  You can have a routine and still do new things.  With grams and her cold we are not doing much, but that's ok.  We got up in the morning and had our Kona coffee (10 per cent).  We had breakfast on the balcony.
One of our favorite things to do is to go to the farmers market.
Christine you will like this, we bought pineapple, avocado, tomatoes and a bagel spread called Liliko cream chease.  Next we went over the small park across the street and watched kids playing in ocean. They were running all over the rocks.  Say what? Ya !  My feet would be all skinned up.
At lunch we had a fantastic sandwich with avocado and tomatoes. Every day a home we sit down a listen to a story.  We did the same thing only today we found two lounge chairs in the shade under a palm tree.  With a gentle breeze we listen to our story for an hour.  I always wanted to do that.
We walked down to the ocean and grams found a chair under a tree and I went for a short walk in the ocean.  The water was cool at first.  I guess I thought it would be warm, but with the gentle breeze it was great.  I'm standing in the ocean, the waves are lapping at my feet.  You look out and watch the waves roll in and it is soothing.
We walked back to our condo so we could Skype.  We were going to go to Lahaina but grams was all tired out.  Here a picture for the kids for they sent a lot of time here.
A great day!!
