Day - 21 A Quest for Sun

Bit and pieces.  Just one thought before I talk about our quest.  Do you know it has taken us three weeks before we have a real, class A, oh ya, routine.  Here is the skinny.  We get up early and have, have a cup of coffee.  We get dress and go for a walk.  After the walk we eat breakfast, shower, and get ready for our day.  Then we go down to ocean to watch people and look for whales.  I like a routine, you always know what expect.

Our quest for sun started at the ocean where there was no sun and rain on the way.  We wanted to go up to Iao needle and have lunch where we ate with our family in 2009.  The rain was heading that way, thus our quest.
We pack our lunch and drive north to Fleming Beach.  It is a down pour, not your Hawaiian rain, I mean big drops, windshield wipers going full blast.  Could our radar on my phone and the direction of the rain be wrong?  Oh not the Weather Channel.  We took our chairs and umbrellas and set them up under trees, in sand on the beach.
We had potatoes salad, sandwich, chips and drink.
We didn't have plates so we used cups, cool. Would you eat this?
Yum.  You can't beat this, rain food, drink and the flies biting your legs and feet.  Just look at the beach.

If you look close you can see the rain falling.  Rain is not stopping these people.  There was some big waves.  There were two sisters jumping waves.  The were 15 maybe 17.  I saw the girls coming in.  They were walking with their back to the waves, never, never turn your back to the ocean.  A huge wave came crashing down on them.  They got tossed around.  The younger one came out crying and holding he back.  She came up and into her moms arms.  The life guard came over and checked her out.  These guys don't miss much.  I went over to tell them what happen to Fred and I on the north shore of Oahu.  Kids were having a good time out there.  I thought it was a good place because they could walk out with their boards, no fins, turn when a big wave came in, here take a look.

The sun is now shining and we thought we head north some more.  Hey take a look.

Just look at the water.

If you saw people snorkeling down below, that's where we decided to go.  You park your car and walk in to the beach, I mean rocky beach.
We got about half way in and Clela got stuck, stuck in the mud.  Well quick thinking I set my phone to take a video.  Gramps to the rescue.  No she got out by her self.
I don't know if you hear her but this reminded her when Lincoln and her got stuck in the mud.  She said that was enough lets turn around, which we did, dogging mud and puddles.  About this time I started to itch all over.  My shin was on fire.  Don't panic I'm saying to my self.
We got back to the car we took our shoes off and put then in the trunk. I drove back bear footed, no problem.  I took a shower and took a Benadryl and am feeling better.  Well that's our day, see ya!

Day 20 - Bits and Pieces and Odds and Ends - Hilo Hattie

This morning we got up had our coffee.
We took our showers, no I'm not going to show you that.  This is after all PG-13.  We got dressed and went for a walk.  No sum today, there is a light Hawaiian rain, you can't see it but you can feel it.
Some day we'll take a good selfy.  We walked over and through Embassy Suits and back.  The walk took us 30 minutes.

Look at Clela go, see how fast her arms are moving.  Go Clela go.  Come on you say it.  Go Clela go!
Up to our condo we made breakfast (maybe Clela made breakfast).  Had a little trouble with microwave.
Oops!
Oh, that's why we had trouble.
Hash brown with cheese, Egg Mc Muffin, on the balcony.

Now to my bits and pieces.  To do this you must first close your eyes and get in a good frame of mind.  Think Andy Rooney, you know the guy that was an 60 minutes.  He is gone now, don't let that bother you, just channel Andy and those thick uncut eye brows, you know like mine.
Did you ever wonder why Q-tips are getting smaller, your paying more money and getting less.  They have gone to plastic.  The old ones you could recycle, but look at all that plastic your putting in the landfills.  I think we should protest.  Ah the good old days.

We make our bed every morning.  Since we're so old we change every day.
Now doesn't that make you feel better?  A little change is good.
I'm from Canada and I'm going to get a good tanning spot, never mind that it is raining!  Ok this picture was taken @ 9:00 in the morning. What are these people thinking??
Click on this picture.  Do you think everyone who goes in the ocean today reads this sign.  I like the top sign, If in doubt don't go out.  I wonder if Fred and I saw this sign when the waves tossed me out of the water and dislocated his shoulder? I guess getting older is getting wiser.  Ok people younger than I are going under everyday.  You know, They never return, no they never return, those houles
never return.  They are riding the waves, they are riding the waves.  They are riding the waves for ever.  Thank you, thank you everyone.  That's my song.  See ya!

Ok, ok Odds and Ends
I'm old what can I say, I did say we were going to Hilo Hattie and yes we did.
If you look at the picture you will Clela in the background.  Now look at the sign on the wall.  Yes!, yes, yes, after all these years Clela and I are getting matching clothes.  I can't wait to show you our purchase.  It's going to knock your socks off.  Are you kidding?  Do you really think we would?
Every time we came to Hawaii we got a free cup (with the purchase of only $25 bucks) at Hilo Hattie.  We have at least 10 cups.  Each Island had its own cup.  For twenty years we looked forward to this free cup (with the purchase of only $25 bucks) at Hilo Hattie. Well times have changed, no more free cup (with the purchase of only $25 bucks) at Hilo Hattie.  You all know I'm always protesting.  Here I tell you all, please write Hilo Hattie and bring back that free cup (with the purchase of only $25 bucks) at Hilo Hattie.  For the second time today I will say, see ya!

Day 19 - Church - Exercise

Church or no Church.  I did say I was going to church.  Is it alright not to go to church?  Must you prove to God your a good Christian by going to church.  That is the question of the day.  Clela says God wants us to go to church.  Ok, are you wondering if I'm going?  Yes I am.  Does that make me a good Christian, I don't know.  I think right now in this beautiful place, I'm very close to God.
We are ready.
Sorry for the quality of the picture, it's not a good day outside.  We drove to the Methodist Church in Lahaina.  We got there about 5 minutes before the start. Wrong it started before we got in.  We sat in the back because that was the only place left.
The church was built in 1922.  The service started with a blowing to a conch shell.
All the new people had to stand up and tell where they were form and when they did they were given a lei.  Clela thought half of the service were visitors.  I really didn't feel well.  As we were singing my head started to spin, my stomach started to roll.  What was happening to me?  Am I dying.  Is this what it feels like?  I could see the head lines in the newspaper.  Houle man dies in church after he questions weather he needs to church.  I was breathing fast.  I stop singing to save my strength.  Could I be hyperventilating?  Well I did clam down and started to feel better.
We sang two songs in the beginning, with the Minister playing the guitar.  Now when they got to the PRAYER RESPONSE I got lost.  They sang it in Hawaiian.  Click on the text to see the words.
The service then proceeded like any other Methodist Church, but when it got to the Offering a group of Tongan singers got up to sing.  The men had authentic clothing on.   One woman was caring a infant.  I thought this is cool, I should record this.  I took out my IPhone and switch it on, hurry, hurry, it took forever.  I paged through and found the memo app.  Man I thought I'm only going to record the last part.  So I pushed record and hoped for the best.  The song went on and on.  I recorded over 4 minutes.  It was at least 6 minutes long.
At the end of the service everybody formed Circles Of Ohana.  The Minister played the ukulele.  We held hands and sang.  I used Lincolns method of singing, move your lips.  Thanks Lincoln!  Here is what we sang.  Just click on the text to see.

At the end of each verse I would sing Hawaii.  Fist bump! Good Hawaiian singing dude!

Exercise, that was my goal before we arrived.  I thought we would get up early and take long walks, just Clela and I.  Well we do get up early, Clela gets up first around 5:30 and I get up around 6:30.  We have our cup of coffee and plan out day.  We have walked to the farmers market, but nothing for any distance.  Well here is a walker, she has just gone by for the 10 time.
There she goes!

Her arms are pumping.  Hey I want to down there and show her I can walk faster, I didn't.  We decided to an ocean front walk, it is new.  The hard to find.  We walked across parking lots over to the ocean and around the corner, walla there is was.  It's raining but we don't care we found the walk.  Well the rich are keeping this walk to themselves.  It is beautiful and it goes all the way to The Whales Village.  Here's Clela.

She is moving fast, her arms are pumping, she is working up a sweat.  Well here is a look at the other half.
I've got to find out how to get to Dukes.
If you can click on these pictures some of these places are hamgo in size.  We walked back to our condo by road and sidewalk.  That my people was an hour walk.  Give Clela a hand!!  She did it!  Set off the firecrackers.  Great job Clela!!  Well that's it for the day, see ya!

Day - 18 - Going to Kihei

On our way to Kihei for a day at the Whale Day Festival.  We really didn't what to expect.  Our guide when we went to Lanai said they have a great festival. Clela had this event on her calendar.  Kihei is on the way to Wailea where we spent one day when we were left behind several years ago.  Just as soon as we made the turn into the city we hit stop and go traffic.  Once we got to the downtown area there was no parking.  So we drove through the downtown area and turned around and found a great spot (one hour parking) in a lot across the street.
What does it look like?

We are getting closer, any ideas? It was an fund raiser for the Pacific Whale Foundation.  Now it's time to eat so we walked around the food area and decided to split a wrap.

After eating we walked around and here is what we saw.

Clela finds something she likes but can't pull the trigger to buy it.  She will walk away and when we get home she wishes she would have bought it.  Well this time I said try it on and I'll take a picture and you decide.

What do you think?  Is that Clela, look, that her.  Well she did buy it, good choice.

I love ukuleles.

This guy buys these shark teeth for about .50 cents to a couple of bucks and sells then for $15 to $30.

Clela wants me to make her a cribbage board.  Everything on this table was made out of Koa wood. That's gold!  Last week some guys were arrested for taking some Koa wood.

The first time we came to the Big Island  and went to the Volcano National Park and this is what we saw.  We thought we could get this close every time, but that never happen again.

Lots of color here.  After three hours, a lot of heat and parked in a one hour spot, we walked back to our car (no ticket) and drove back to our condo.  Well that was our day.  See ya!!

Day 17 - My new office - Tanning -Valentine's Day

Welcome to my new office.  My computer has a new battery so I can work anywhere now.

About a week ago we went into Office Max in Lahaina and ordered a new battery.  They sent us a tracking number from Fed ex.  Each day we would follow its travel.  The battery started out in Cleveland and went to Memphis, then on to Fresno, Ca. where it was left on a door step.  Ok, ok something is wrong here.  I don't think I'm in Fresno.  I ran into the bedroom and get my receipt, get the number of the Office Max store and call.  "Sir no one orders a battery and has it sent here."  "Ya " I said.  "Why would you want to do that"?  I said.  "because I an on vacation." He said "Oh".  "Ok do you have a tracking number"?  I gave him the number.  He looks it up on the computer and says, "it was delivered to Fresno".  He says "Fresno! just a minute sir, that can't be right". "It says on the order to be delivered to the store and pick up by the owner".  "I'll check some more".  Ok some how I was sent the wrong tracking number and I was able to pick it up last night.  Whew!!  Now I can sit outside and work in my new office.

Did you ever watch people tan?  I'm the kind of guy who thinks a little color on my face looks good.  But these people young and old are sun worshipers.  The follow the sun.  Well I have an unique perspective sitting on our balcony.  Just look and follow the chairs.

I know I was that person but it seems crazy.  GET UP PEOPLE!!  Do you think they heard me?
Tonight, which means later this afternoon.  We are going to the Whalers to eat.  I talked Clela into going later.  She wanted to go for lunch.  Now doesn't that sound old.  So I will put up some pic later.

The Whaler Mall, how does it look?
We knew we should get to Leilani's  on the Beach as soon as possible.  You know it's Valentines Day and everyone will be out to eat, we were right a 30 wait. The music was playing with a Hawaiian rain falling.

To start our night we ordered drinks Clela had a Lava Flow, hmm and I had Anuenue drink.  That Hawaiian for mighty good drink!!
Both drinks look the same.  Mind had more of an strawberry taste.  New we ordered our meal.  I had Kalua pork sandwich.  Hey this the Maui I should be able to get a good pulled pork sandwich right, I did.
I could have taken a better picture.  Clela ordered coconut shrimp.
It was a great meal. That was our day, last night also. Ok, ok, sometimes I get a little carried away talking, so I'll say see ya!

Day - 16 Breakfast at Napilli Shores

Did you ever drive 15 min. on a winding road just to eat breakfast? Then once you get there is no place to park?  Once you find a place to park you stand in line for 1 hour just to get in!

Well here  we are in the middle of an resort (ours is much better) waiting to eat at the Gazebo.  I think this would be a problem if I were staying here. A gazebo.
What do you do when your standing in line, you start talking to people. " Have you ever been here before?" " How long is the wait". " I think it's 30 min., oh I think it's an hour".  Then you ask where are you from.  "I'm from Canada, "I'm from Chicago"," We are from Milwaukee".  Am I doing the quotes right Katie, Reagan, Alyssa??  The couple from Chi town lived and worked in West Allis at one time.  After you start looking around you realize that we all about the same age and demographics.  Most of people here are not rich, but well enough to be here.
We finally got inside and ordered right away.  If you don't know what you want it's too late Ethel.  You wont see the waitress for a long time.  Guess what I ordered?  Oh come on guess.  You got it.  I couldn't eat it all.
Grams ordered something weird, like rice something.  I'm mean rice for breakfast??
Ok there is a little eggs on top of that mountain.  Needless to say she did bring it home for breakfast tomorrow.  Now that I made fun of her selection do you think she will let me have some? Hmm.
Pretty view.
On our way back we stopped at ABC Store and filled up the tank.  I paid $42.00, not bad for two weeks of travel.  Tonight we are going to Lahaina to pick up my computer battery, I hope.  Well that's our day breakfast a swim in the pool and watching the waves roll in.  Can't believe it. See Ya!
