February 16th 2018 Going Up Country

Got up this morning and the first thing I did was pull back the curtains to see if it was still raining.  This is what I saw.

The sky was blue and the sun was shining.  Great!  Clela made the coffee and breakfast and our day has started.  She made French Toast.

Okay, okay I forgot to take a picture.  Hey you see that small piece Clela is about to eat?  Well zoom in will ya.  Zoomed in ?  I told you that was French toast.

Today we are going up country to Halimaile .  A small community on the side of Haleakala volcano. We were up 1500 feet above sea level.  That is not that much but was a climb for our little car.  It is high enough to pop your ears.  We went to see art glass.

From the outside it looks like something lest over from world war two. Makai Studio.  The gallery has a area above the floor to view art glass made right in front of you.  With chairs to set and watch we were there for an hour.  The piece we saw was made in pieces. First the base is heated and then brought out to reshape waves.

Next they add clear glass in sheets to each wave.

After all waves are covered and shaped.  They add a whale.

Once the whale is in place they cut off the bottom and put the art glass in a cooling oven.  The oven then cools the piece down slowly.  If it cooled by air it would break,

My phone got so hot I thought it would shut down.

Here are some art pieces.

Some of the pieces sold for $7,000.

Now time to eat.  We walked across the street to a General Store Restaurant.  We both ordered fish toco.
I had a Lilikoi Lemonade and Clela had Ice Tea.

We ordered an upside down pineapple cake.  My mother's cake was better, but it was still good.

We drove home getting lost but didn't really get lost because we were heading in the right direction.

Well that was our day.  See you tomorrow.
